LETTERS, Page 8Positively Inclined
In our Planet of the Year issue we asked our readers what they
might be willing to do to help slow environmental decline. So far,
10,234 people have replied. The proposal to pay 50 per gal. more
in gasoline taxes in order to spur fuel conservation was greeted
with approval by 7,867, while 2,228 said no. Some claimed such a
hike "would be regressive." The idea of dividing garbage into
separate categories in order to facilitate recycling drew an even
higher number of supporters: 9,715. Five percent of them already
presort their trash. Only 479 nixed the idea. We heard from 266
ecophobes, 2.6% of the total, who answered no to both proposals.
